23 Ways to Grow Your Hair Faster
One thing we repeatedly get asked is, how can I get my hair to grow faster?
While it should be noted that everyone’s hair grows at an individual rate, there are ways you can ensure healthy future hair growth. And, like most other things, it is the slow and consistent small changes over time that lead to the big change. If you are patient and keep going with your hair growth treatments, you will achieve hair that looks better and grows faster.
Here is a no-nonsense list with ways you can grow your hair faster:
1. Sweat
There is no proof that sweat directly makes hair grow faster, but increasing your activity level and difficulty increases blood circulation. Circulation does increase hair growth.
2. Eat a Healthy, Well-Rounded Diet
Omega 3’s are great building blocks for hair. Diet is so individual and we are not nutritionists, so we won’t get into specifics, but you are an organism that needs sunlight, vitamins and minerals to survive. If you can make sure you have the right nutrients and are providing a hospitable environment for your hair to grow- that is a great place to be for encouraging your hair to grow.
3. De-Stress.
It has been proven that hair has a possibility of shedding approximately 3-4 months after a stressful event. Whether it was COVID, a job change, a loss in the family, all of those things can directly impact your hair and instigate shedding. Try meditation, massages and yoga to relax. We recommend the Calm app for meditation, New Beauty Wellness locally for massages, and Yoga4everybody in Fairfield for yoga.
4. Take supplements like Nutrafol.
We have had clients have success with this. It takes months to see any impact this might make. I’m somewhat uncomfortable adding random supplements to my diet without testing to see what I need or might be overdoing and not realizing, but you do what makes you comfortable. My recommendation is asking your physician for a vitamin panel before you start a supplement and months after to check in on yourself. You deserve to know how something is reacting in your body.
5. Apply Topical Finasteride, such as Rogaine to the hair.
Men can take an oral pill called Propecia that prevents their hair from falling out, lucky them. It can come with some intense side effects, though. Women don’t have this option, as finasteride is somewhat of a controversial ingredient. Used topically, like in the form of Rogaine or similar brand marketed towards women, it has lesser side effects. Again, something you want to read up about. This is one of those if you start it, you can’t stop it situations or progress will be lost.
6. Scalp Serums
The Ordinary, Vegamour, Nutrafol, and other companies market scalp serums that claim t grow hair quickly. We haven’t personally tested this so we can’t speak to their success. I think it could be worth a shot if you are willing to add that step into your routine.
7. Rosemary Spray
There are DIY recipes, like this one, that claim to use Rosemary oil to increase scalp circulation and grow your hair faster. I think, if done consistenly if you are massaging your scalp it will increase circulation. Rosemary oil smells amazing. So this may be worth a try.
8. Castor Oil Scalp Treatment
We have tried oiling our scalps with castor oil by itself, and found it’s too sticky and messy for us personally. It takes a few shampoos to remove. But, many people online claim it has numerous growth benefits
9. Silk or Satin
Wear a satin or silk headwrap to bed, or a silk or satin pillowcase. This will prevent hairline friction damage.
10. Protective Hairstyle
Braids and ponys that keep your hair out of the way when you are exposed to wind or other damage is considered a protective style. Great to wear a braid to bed to prevent knots as well.
11. Wind Protection
Wear a headband, wrap or hat when participating in a high-wind activity, like boating. Wind damage is a thing.
12. Heat Protection
Apply heat protectant always when heat styling your hair. Also, minimize hot tools to 1-2 times per week.
13. Beneficial Styling Tools
The Dyson wand and dryer of course are low-heat and therefore less damaging options for hair styling. There are also hot tools that claim to be beneficial for your hair- like the Hairbeuron. Check it out! We love to see new technology.
14. Use Quality Shampoos and Conditioners.
This can make a huge impact as it is something you are using daily or every couple days. Many shampoos can be too stripping of natural oils, which are needed for a healthy scalp environment. Too little cleansing can lead to buildup and block your scalp follicles as well. Bad conditioner adds buildup onto your hair and blocks those follicles. We love our brand of shampoo because it is balancing, non stripping, sulfate free and only scented with natural essential oils. You can find it here.
15. Sun Protection
Apply a UV product to protect from the sun. You won’t find us on the beach with this one. Obviously, the sun has the power to lighten and dry out hair as we know from spending time at length on the beach and at that soccer tournament you had to attend in 100 degree weather.
16. Oil on your ends
Apply oil to your ends 1-2x a day, and after heat styling. Reintroducing oils can help with your hair strands flexibility, leaving it less prone to breakage. Fine hair is great for sweet almond oil, while thicker textures can accept argon and coconut oil. Use a small amount, always.
17. At Home Treatments
Deep conditioning and home protein treatments. We love Biogeo deep conditioning mask and Joico Deep Penetrating Reconstructing treatment. The Joyce home treatment is life changing. And, it smells like bananas!
18. Clarify your Hair
You could do a mild version of this with an apple cider vinegar rinse. You could do a better one with Malibu Wellness. You could do the best one at the salon with a Redken PreArt treatment. You need to get the mineral buildup out of your hair every so often to get a clean canvas. You would be surprised what sticks in your hair. Yes, we offer this at the studio. It will completely remove chlorine and is one of our favorite treatments to do as you can see a clear before and after as the treatment is removed.
19. Scalp Massage
This increases blood flow to the area, therefore stimulating growth. You can use those scrubby tik-tok tools like this one or your fingers will work just fine! You can do this with wet or dry hair.
20. Bond Builders
Making sure bond builders are added to your hair color formula and treatment to help prevent damage. They add nutrients and special chemicals to your color that prevent breakage and improve flexibility. If you haven’t noticed, prevention is a huge step towards healthy hair growth.
21. Glossing
Keep your appointments and listen to your stylist, ladies. They are not telling you to book a gloss every 4-6 weeks just because they want to see you so soon! Booking your gloss appointments at the time you need to every 4-6 weeks is best for your hair and keeps your color looking fresh. These colors are acidic in pH and because of that, help lock your existing color in, add shine, neutralize unwanted pigments and prevent damage by reintroducing/refilling proteins and nutrients to protect your hair shaft. They are essential.
