Camera-Ready Hair and Makeup: Preparing for Your Headshot or Branding Shoot

Okay, you’ve got a big photoshoot coming up—whether it’s for your LinkedIn profile, website, or a personal branding refresh. Let’s make sure you’re totally camera-ready!

Hair: Keep It Sleek or Soft

  • Go for a polished blowout or soft curls for a timeless look. No extreme styles—you want to look like the best polished version of yourself.

  • Don’t budget blow-dry this one, book a professional. At Haus of Pretty, you can book a professional that regularly works with our resident photographer, Nataliya Lalor. This professional has been trained to tweak styles according to this photographers feedback, reducing editing time and resulting in a more professional looking image. The artist is also styling according to your overall face shape, hair texture and type of image you are taking. This means your image comes back quicker and higher quality. Your artist is trained to notice certain things specific to them working on camera. As most of us are aware of, you look different on camera and video versus in real life. Unless you are a professional in this field, best to leave it to the artist. We can always spot when an image isn’t professionally styled.

  • If you can’t seek a professional for help, invest in a Dyson Air Wrap dryer or use Robe Curls to create a predictable and blowout soft result.

Makeup: Natural, but Elevated

  • Start with a primer to make your makeup last under hot lights.

  • Focus on flawless skin with a medium-coverage, SPF free foundation. The SPF scatters light that is unfavorable on camera. We also love mixing a lightweight lotion in with a full coverage foundation to create a flexible look. This is especially useful on mature skin that needs a hydrated, dewy texture to appear like natural skin.

  • Stick to neutral tones for eyes and lips-you want the focus to stay on you. This is a general rule. We love Bobbi Brown’s philosophy that you should pick a lip color that matches your lips. It looks like a more polished version of you. The caveat to this is if you typically wear a signature pop, like a winged black liner or red lip. If you normally do that- go for it in the image. Make sure your lips are glossed for the photo. Use a high shine lip gloss like this one, otherwise on camera your lips will appear dry. Bonus points if it plumps like this one- this lip gloss is a models secret, says our founder Kelsey Morey, something she has learned over the years behind the scenes in business.
